ILVO Vlaanderen

ILVO, the Flanders Research Institute for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, is an independent scientific research institute established by the Flemish Government. Its primary mission is to generate knowledge for sustainable practices within the agriculture, fisheries, and agri-food sectors, aiming to provide sufficient healthy and diverse food for a projected global population of 10 billion while adhering to planetary limits. ILVO conducts multidisciplinary and independent research, focusing on enhancing products, production methods, and policy instruments crucial for sector development and rural policy. By employing systems thinking and integrating tacit knowledge with new technologies, ILVO provides solutions to challenges within the agri-food chain in a proactive and objective manner. The organization engages in continuous dialogue with stakeholders and conducts co-creative research through living labs, promoting collaboration among researchers, end-users, and communities. The institute emphasizes a systems-oriented approach, addressing the complexities of the agro-food ecosystem and fostering interdisciplinary research that combines technical and socio-economic expertise. ILVO operates under five core values that guide staff conduct and management decisions, promoting an open culture of trust and communication. In line with European initiatives, ILVO is committed to gender equality in research and innovation and has established a Gender Equality Plan to identify and address gaps and inequalities. The organization has also partnered with CIFAL Flanders to enhance sustainability practices and has received recognition as an SDG Pioneer. In 2021, ILVO initiated the ILVO Research Landscape project to connect innovative research with practical agricultural applications, including efforts to promote biodiversity. The institute is developing state-of-the-art facilities, such as the Innovocean marine research complex, and enhancing community engagement with interactive initiatives like the Kouterwandeling.
