About ReGeNL

ReGeNL is a Dutch transition programme focused on regenerative agriculture. It brings together farmers, chain partners, governments, knowledge institutions, and other organisations to help make farming more regenerative, profitable, and socially supported.

The programme is designed to support farmers in moving toward practices that improve soil health, biodiversity, and ecosystem services while also strengthening business models. ReGeNL positions itself as a practical, system-wide effort: it combines guidance, knowledge, monitoring, financing, and collaboration to help farmers and regional partners work toward future-proof agriculture by 2030. To achieve this aim, ReGeNL is supported by more than 60 partners from across the entire supply chain: from financiers and research organisations to policymakers, processors and retailers. These include leading cooperatives, networks and research institutions such as FrieslandCampina, Cosun, Agrifirm, Rabobank, Wij.land, De Plaatsen, BoerenNatuur, CSA Netwerk, Toekomstboeren, the University of Groningen, Utrecht University, Wageningen University & Research, ZLTO and, as of now, Staatsbosbeheer. The programme is funded by the National Growth Fund.

Core Values

  • Regeneration: ReGeNL is built around farming that restores soil, biodiversity, and ecosystem functions rather than only extracting from them.

  • Practical viability: The programme emphasizes business models and market conditions that make regenerative farming economically workable for farmers.

  • Collaboration: ReGeNL relies on cooperation across farmers, advisers, researchers, governments, and chain partners to remove barriers to transition.

  • Evidence and learning: The programme stresses monitoring, data, and shared learning so that regenerative practices can be assessed, improved, and scaled responsibly.

Unique Aspects

  • Nationaal Groeifonds backing: ReGeNL was established with investment from the Dutch National Growth Fund, giving it long-term public backing as a large-scale transition programme.

  • Broad consortium: The programme is carried by a consortium of 54 organisations, including Wageningen University & Research, which gives it a wide knowledge and implementation base.

  • Scale ambition: ReGeNL aims to support 1,000 farmers in the transition to regenerative agriculture by 2030, making it one of the larger regenerative agriculture programmes in Europe.

  • Regional project structure: The programme works through five regional development plans and multiple area projects, linking farm-level change to landscape-level outcomes.

  • Evidence from pioneering farmers: Research feeding into ReGeNL highlights profitable regenerative examples and smart market strategies as a way to make the transition more attractive to other farmers.
