Bio Base Europe Pilot Plant (BBEPP) offers custom manufacturing of biobased products and processes through its advanced, independent, and flexible pilot facility. It focuses on process development, scale-up, and custom manufacturing, utilizing a diverse array of modular unit operations along with skilled engineers and technicians to translate laboratory protocols into industrial processes. BBEPP's R&D Department innovates various technologies aimed at producing sustainable products from different industrial feedstocks, exploring low Technology Readiness Levels (TRL) technologies such as advanced fermentation and separation methods like in situ product recovery to enhance production of key industrial platform molecules. The facility specializes in biocatalysis, the creation of novel recombinant proteins, and process intensification strategies, including continuous cultivation. It is also a leader in gas fermentation, converting industrial CO2 emissions into valuable bioproducts like biofuels, bioplastics, and biomaterials. In addition, BBEPP is contributing to the global protein transition and promoting a sustainable bioeconomy through the development of sustainable production strategies for alternative proteins and cultured meat. The establishment of its first spin-off company, AmphiStar, was announced in July 2021, which is focused on developing a proprietary technology platform for the ecological production of biosurfactants, particularly based on glycolipid technology using the yeast Starmerella bombicola. Key R&D projects include: - BIOCONCO2: Converting CO2 from the iron and steel industry into commodities for chemicals and plastics. - CAPTUS: Integrating energy-intensive industry solutions to produce renewable energy carriers from captured carbon emissions. - SECRETed: Creating novel molecules by combining biosynthetic genes from marine and extremophilic microorganisms to produce biosurfactants and siderophores. AmphiStar aims to advance and demonstrate biosurfactant technology at an industrial level. More details regarding these projects can be found on BBEPP’s website.
