Afropulse BV is a Wageningen University & Research (WUR) spin-off rooted in Ghana, with its origins in Tamale—the heart of the cowpea belt. We are redefining how plant-based ingredients are sourced, produced, and valued. Our work begins with the cowpea , a climate-resilient, nitrogen-fixing crop that thrives in dry conditions without driving deforestation. Naturally rich in high-quality protein, fiber, and micronutrients, cowpea flour and protein fractions offer excellent functional properties for clean-label foods—high solubility, strong emulsification, and gel-forming capacity—making it a powerful ingredient for the next generation of sustainable food products. At the center of Afropulse’s mission are female farmers and processors who grow and transform cowpeas locally through dry fractionation , keeping value addition in Ghana while building skills and livelihoods. Our model is driven by Black female entrepreneurship , combining scientific excellence with the courage to build profitable, purpose-driven business. We believe in creating wealth through fairness—where impact and income grow together, and where African production is linked to European innovation through respect, not extraction. Our clients and partners choose Afropulse not only for the quality and functionality of our ingredients but also for the authentic story behind them—a story of women, science, and social transformation. Every kilogram of Afropulse cowpea protein represents a step toward equitable trade, climate-smart agriculture, and a new narrative for African-made excellence. We invite collaborators from the Foodleap community to join us in scaling this model of shared value and regenerative entrepreneurship.
