About upfarming

Upfarming is a Dutch initiative focused on accelerating the transition to regenerative agriculture. Its website presents regenerative farming as a way to produce high-quality, affordable food while restoring soil health, biodiversity, water retention, and resilience in farming systems and rural regions.

The organization positions itself as a bridge between practice, knowledge, and system change. It works with farmers, advisers, financiers, and policymakers, and frames its role as helping develop the tools, approaches, and enabling conditions needed for regenerative agriculture to scale from individual farms to the wider food system.

Core Values

  • Regeneration: Upfarming centers its work on regenerating natural processes in soil, farms, chains, and regions. The goal is not only to reduce harm, but to restore the functioning of living systems.
  • Practical system change: The organization emphasizes workable, field-based solutions rather than abstract theory. It values tools, reference frameworks, and step-by-step transition support that can be applied on real farms.
  • Resilience and independence: A recurring theme is reducing dependence on fossil inputs and external suppliers while improving farm resilience, business balance, and food system robustness.
  • Broad value creation: Upfarming frames regenerative agriculture as delivering financial, social, and ecological returns at the same time, including benefits for health, biodiversity, climate, water, and rural communities.

Unique Aspects

  • Focus on the full transition ecosystem: Upfarming does not limit itself to farm-level advice; it also works on chains, consumers, and policy conditions, reflecting a multi-level approach to agricultural change.
  • Course co-developed with multiple partners: The adviser training is coordinated by Upfarming and developed with parties including Groeibalans, Latitude advies, De Boeren Academie, Wij.land, CO2L-Farming Advies, ReGeNL, and Urgenda, showing a collaborative model rather than a standalone course.
  • Accredited adviser training: The Basiscursus Adviseur Regeneratieve Landbouw is VAB-accredited and offers 40 PE points, which gives the program formal professional recognition.
  • Strong advocacy voice: Upfarming also publishes opinion pieces arguing that the Dutch agricultural system remains tied to fossil inputs and that regenerative agriculture offers a way out of the nitrogen and sustainability deadlock.
