About Sustainable Finance Lab

Sustainable Finance Lab (SFL) is an independent academic think tank focused on sustainable finance and the systemic reform of the financial sector. Rooted in Utrecht University’s School of Economics, it brings together academics and professionals from multiple disciplines to research, propose, and advocate for changes that help finance serve people and planet.

SFL works at the intersection of research, policy engagement, and public debate. It develops policy papers, working papers, insights, and events that address issues such as bank resilience, climate risk, the energy transition, the digital euro, and the role of finance in a sustainable economy. The organization also operates in Brussels through its FINEXUS initiative.

Core Values

  • Independence: SFL states that independence is a core value and is structured as an independent foundation with its own board and governance. This supports its ability to challenge prevailing assumptions and advocate for systemic reform.
  • Academic rigor: The organization is rooted in Utrecht University and guided by an academic network of professors and researchers. Its work combines scholarly analysis with practical policy recommendations.
  • Systemic change: SFL focuses on structural reforms rather than isolated fixes, aiming to reshape the financial system so it better supports a sustainable economy.
  • People and planet: Its mission is explicitly framed around a financial sector that works for people and planet, linking financial stability with environmental and social outcomes.

Unique Aspects

  • University-rooted think tank: SFL is rooted in Utrecht University’s School of Economics, giving it a strong academic base while remaining operationally independent.
  • Bridge between research and policy: The lab combines academic research, advocacy, and public events to move ideas from analysis into policy debate and implementation.
  • Active in Brussels via FINEXUS: SFL extends its influence beyond the Netherlands through FINEXUS, its Brussels initiative focused on European-level sustainable finance discussions.
  • Broad funding base with independence safeguards: SFL is supported by Utrecht University, Triodos Bank, De Nederlandsche Bank, the Laudes Foundation, and the KR Foundation, while emphasizing that independence remains central to its work.
  • Track record in shaping debate: The dossier notes that an SFL letter to parliament in 2012 helped lead to the Committee on the Structure of Dutch Banks, showing its ability to influence institutional reform.
