About CoopEsem

CoopESEM is a citizen cooperative based in the Entre-Sambre-et-Meuse region of Belgium. It brings together producers, consumers, and local actors to build a short supply chain for local food that is tasty and of good quality, while supporting a more ecological and community-oriented way of consuming and producing.

The cooperative serves both individual consumers and professional buyers. It operates a producer shop and a network of pickup points, and it also develops B2B delivery for organizations such as public bodies, caterers, and HoReCa customers. Its positioning is explicitly local and participatory: it aims to be more than a distribution service and presents itself as a citizen movement offering an alternative to the existing system.

Unique Aspects

• Citizen cooperative model: CoopESEM is jointly built by producers and consumers, with each cooperative member having one vote at general assemblies regardless of the number of shares held.
• Regional short-chain network: The cooperative operates across multiple communes in the Entre-Sambre-et-Meuse and combines a producer shop with several pickup points.
• Mixed producer base: It accepts products from both organic and conventional agriculture, with the distinction clearly indicated on the online shop so customers can choose knowingly.
• Expanded local infrastructure: In April 2025, CoopESEM moved to Oret and installed its new shop, warehouse, and offices there; the site had previously opened its first producer shop in Florennes in November 2023.
