Saalbio Refineries, based in Cape Town, is a sustainable algae bio refinery focused on producing high-quality microalgae, beta carotene, antioxidants, and plant-based proteins for agriculture and aquaculture, aiming to promote global health and social impact. The company, named "SAALBIO" for "South African Algae Biorefineries," seeks to establish a vibrant algae industry in South Africa, where currently no commercial algae farming exists. To advance its mission, Saalbio has partnered with an established European algae company to utilize cutting-edge algae propagation and processing technologies. Saalbio plans to initiate a pilot project in the Atlantis Special Economic Zone (SEZ), testing various technologies for algae cultivation and market products. The Albert SEZ, designated as a Special Greentech Economic Zone, supports industrial and economic growth in the region, capitalizing on South Africa's renewable energy sector. This designation was confirmed by the Minister of Trade and Industry in June 2018 and aims to attract both local and foreign investment through various incentives. The project's size and technologies are currently under discussion, aligning with the SEZ framework aimed at fostering development in niche industries.
