Producentenorganisatie Eiwitboeren van Nederland, or Protein Farmers of the Netherlands, is a producer organization formed by growers of leguminous plants aimed at revitalizing the cultivation of legumes in the Netherlands. Established amid concerns over declining legume cultivation, which fell from over 35,000 hectares in 1951 to approximately 6,000 hectares today, the organization seeks to promote local legumes as nutritious and favorable for the environment, biodiversity, farmers, and consumers. The Protein Farmers collaborate with various stakeholders to create a transparent and value-driven chain for vegetable protein sourced from Dutch soil. This initiative focuses on enhancing the economic position of Dutch Protein Farmers by ensuring that the value added to these products translates into sustainable sales prices. The organization supports a diverse range of leguminous crops, including field beans, lupine, white beans, kidney beans, soy, and chickpeas. Formed in collaboration with entities like Foodvalley NL, Ekoboerderij de Lingehof, Proeflab Wageningen, and the Taskforce Korte Keten, the Protein Farmers of the Netherlands aim to foster sustainable agriculture and reestablish the significance of locally grown legumes. The organization encourages new members who grow dry-harvested leguminous protein crops to join their efforts.
