Colzaco
Colzaco is a cooperative rapeseed association in Eastern Netherlands, formally named Coöperatieve Koolzaadvereniging Oost Nederland Colzaco U.A. It was founded in December 2006 after a feasibility study concluded that a regional rapeseed chain in Eastern Netherlands was viable. The cooperative grew out of a group of farmers who wanted to improve the economic return from rapeseed by coordinating local cultivation, processing, and sales. Today Colzaco says it has around 120 members. Its market position is built around cooperation across the chain: helping growers produce rapeseed, process it regionally, and market the resulting products and by-products under favorable conditions. The organization also presents itself as a knowledge-driven platform for making rapeseed a stronger and more sustainable crop in Dutch agriculture. Core Values Regional value creation : Colzaco focuses on keeping cultivation, processing, and sales close to home so more value remains in the regional rapeseed chain. Sustainability : The cooperative links rapeseed to lower food miles, soil improvement, winter ground cover, and broader use of the whole plant. Collaboration : Its model depends on farmers, processors, and other market parties working together to improve returns and strengthen the chain. Knowledge and experimentation : Colzaco invests in trials, demo fields, and a knowledge center to improve varieties, cultivation methods, and product applications. Unique Aspects Farmer cooperative with a regional chain mission : Colzaco was created specifically to build a viable rapeseed chain in Eastern Netherlands, from cultivation through processing to market. Whole-plant utilization approach : The cooperative emphasizes full valorization of rapeseed, including oil, protein, fiber, and straw, rather than focusing on a single output. Knowledge center and demo fields : Colzaco runs a knowledge center and test fields to study varieties, cultivation conditions, processing, and market applications. EFRO-backed development work : Its EFRO project on rapeseed 2.0 is supported by EFRO Oost and aims to develop local, sustainable business models and new product lines. Own branded consumer oil : Colzaco says its rapeseed oil is sold in nearly every supermarket in the Netherlands under its Brassica brand.
