How do we get more Dutch legumes on our plates? More and more people are switching to a more plant-based diet, which is why the demand for meat substitutes has increased in recent years. However, much of the soy, which forms an important basis for meat substitutes, is imported and thus comes from far away. A shame, because growing legumes, which include soy, field beans, peas, lupines and brown beans, bring many benefits to our health, to healthy soil, biodiversity and climate. Because of these benefits, growers would like to include them in their cropping plans, but there is currently very little demand for Dutch cultivation and the returns for the grower are too low. Because few Dutch processors, market participants and consumers know about these benefits, so our environment is not benefiting enough from the increasing demand for plant-based proteins! This is where FoodLab Pulses is going to change. From October 2019 to October 2020, processors, growers and designers will work together to develop new products that stimulate the Dutch cultivation of legumes. So that this offers new opportunities for growers. Because how nice would it be, to be able to eat and drink plant protein products from Dutch Soil? That is healthy for humans, good for soil and biodiversity and good for the climate!
