AlGreen

Algreen B.V., founded in 2015 and based in Wageningen, specializes in assisting microalgae producers across Europe with the design and construction of algae production systems, as well as providing advice on regulations and organic certification. Their mission, 'every day algae', reflects their belief in the potential of algae to replace traditional products due to their unique properties and sustainable production methods. Algreen supports clients throughout various aspects of their algae business, from production to downstream processes, ensuring compliance with food regulations and EU organic certification. The company has a proven track record in helping producers, offering services that range from proprietary microalgae collection to the establishment of turnkey facilities. Notably, they have designed and constructed multiple spirulina production plants using different culture techniques, including open ponds and tubular photobioreactors. In addition to production, Algreen focuses on the downstream processing of microalgae, including biomass drying, extraction, and product formulation. They assist clients in designing new processes, industrializing R&D lab-scale methods, and optimizing existing processes, such as the extraction of phycocyanin pigment from spirulina. With extensive experience in organic certification, Algreen is involved with both European and US regulations and is a member of COMBIO of AISAM, the Italian microalgae association's working group on organic standards. Since 2021, they have also contributed to the NEN Standard Committee for Algae and algae products. Algreen conducts cost-benefit analyses, feasibility studies, and regulatory quick scans, leveraging hands-on experience in microalgae cultivation, particularly in spirulina production. Their services include upstream and downstream process design, cost price calculations, equipment recommendations, online monitoring, organic certification advice, and training for operational staff. They have successfully designed, constructed, and managed several production facilities in Italy, The Netherlands, and Portugal.
