Rethink Protein Challenge (Project)

The Rethink Protein Challenge, organized by Wageningen University & Research (WUR), focuses on sustainability, innovative food systems, and developing new protein sources from plants and microbes. The challenge invites participants to create a business idea or prototype that addresses the needs of 9 billion people for healthy, affordable, and environmentally friendly protein solutions. In its second edition, running from January to June 2021, the challenge generated thirty innovative ideas, culminating in a Grand Finale on June 25, 2021. The winners included Team Cultivated for their milk-fat substitute and Team Algo for cultivating microalgae from food and beverage industry effluents. The competition is designed to inspire students and foster collaboration with experts in the field. Participants benefit from networking opportunities and the chance to develop their skills while contributing to the vital protein transition alongside the energy transition for a sustainable future.
