Agroecology involves implementing ecological principles in agricultural systems to optimize interactions between plants, animals, humans and the environment to lead to sustainable and equitable agri-food systems. Our research aims to: • Preserve cultivated environments • Reduce the use of synthetic inputs (pesticides, antibiotics, fertilizers) through biological regulations • Diversify agricultural production at all scales, from field to plate. Develop sustainable management strategies for biodiversity and the services it provides, at the territorial scale. Understand agricultural living environments, natural or with little human influence, and landscape arrangements favorable to biodiversity. Move agricultural ecosystems towards greater sustainability in connection with the contributions of agroecology. Contribute to climate neutrality, by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and the sustainable storage of carbon in soils and biomass. Adapting agriculture, forests and water management to climate change. Understanding, anticipating and preventing risks in order to reduce the vulnerability of ecosystems and increase their resilience. Better predicting, preventing and adapting to multiple risks and their interactions. The bioeconomy aims for sustainable and circular production and use of biological resources in order to: • Contribute to reducing the use of fossil carbon for food, materials, molecules, energy • Contribute to reducing losses and waste and develop eco-design (or transformation processes that save molecules, water and energy) • Contribute to the development of territories while preserving natural resources and providing ecosystem services. • How can we ensure food security for populations from local to global levels? • What impacts do our food consumption and behaviors have on our health and the environment? • What are the links between production methods, food characteristics and our health? • What levers of action for healthy, sustainable and accessible food for all? To achieve this, our research: • analyzes and supports the strategies of actors in the territories and in the different production sectors • studies and evaluates public policies in their coherence at different levels of scale, territorial, national and international • studies and supports food, energy, agroecological and digital transitions. Reading time 4:23 Play the video [INRAE, the extraordinary everyday] Léa, the eco-balancing artist Léa Veuillen takes us to the Font-Blanche experimental station located near Marseille. At this unique site, teams from the INRAE sites in Avignon and Aix-en-Provence (INRAE Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur center) are studying the functioning of the forest ecosystem typical of the French Mediterranean region. During her thesis, Léa examined the impact of drought on the growth of the Aleppo pine and, more specifically, on the development of its crown, i.e., all of its branches and leaves. With her colleagues, here Mathieu Audouard, assistant engineer, she takes monthly measurements of height and posture, sometimes complex, at 10-15 meters above the ground.
