ONE\THIRD - think tank on food loss and waste

ONE\THIRD is a Danish think tank focused on combating and preventing food waste and food loss. It engages stakeholders from the entire food chain, public authorities, and the research community to promote sustainable practices, particularly aligning with UN Sustainable Development Goal 12.3, which aims to halve global food waste at retail and consumer levels and reduce losses in production and supply chains by 2030. A stark reality is that one-third of all food produced globally is either lost or wasted, contributing to significant environmental, economic, and ethical issues, including generating 8% of greenhouse gases and costing $940 billion annually. Despite producing twice the necessary food for the global population, many still face starvation, emphasizing the urgent need for action. ONE\THIRD's primary goal is to create a foundation of accountable nationwide programs, research, and initiatives throughout the food value chain, thereby enhancing Denmark's position as a leader in the fight against food loss and waste. The think tank particularly emphasizes support for civil society's efforts, business opportunities, international cooperation, and improved data accessibility. Supported by a diverse board consisting of experts and leaders across various fields, ONE\THIRD collaborates with international specialists and organizations to access extensive knowledge. Working groups within the organization focus on initiatives to support civil society, enhance business opportunities for Danish companies, address barriers to preventing food waste, improve data collection and verification, and facilitate cooperation with foreign partners. Annually, the think tank provides the Danish government with recommendations for action on these focus areas, with all documentation available in Danish.
